Several months ago I posted about designer Cas Holman's exhibit along NYC's High Line, which was a huge hit with kids. Created with the idea that loose parts can make the best toys, the pop-up play spot featured several stations of "kits" composed of wood pieces, nuts, bolts and other items for kids to put together in whatever fashion they chose. I quickly e-mailed Cas after I learned that she also designed the large foam loose parts at Imagination Playground right across the street from our old apartment in Manhattan's financial district. I begged her to let me know when her Workyard Kit would become available for purchase, and the time is finally here! The Workyard Kit is a large-scale building kit for hands-on play and
learning composed of 253 parts total: wooden planks, wheels, pulleys, bolts and
rope that allow children to follow their curiosity while playing.
In the words of Cas, "There are
no wrong answers, and children can build a simple machine or structure,
and their creation can also become a giraffe, monster, robot, airplane
or just a 'thingy.' The fun of playing, cooperating and building is the
goal, not the finished product." Sounds like the perfect Christmas present to me! Kits are manufactured in the U.S. and comply with ASTM and Consumer Product Safety Testing for Children's Toys. There is a 4-week lead time on all orders, so get yours in time before the holidays by ordering now. Kits can be ordered by e-mailing [email protected].
